Saturday, March 8th and Sunday, March 9th were big days for South Delta Secondary gymnasts. Spent in Nanaimo, they competed for the AAA B.C. High School Gymnastics Championships with around 25 athletes. At Level 1, Alicia McLean won silver and in the boy's division, Grade 12 student Mark Dykstra won gold. At Level 4, Max Ellwood won gold in the boy's division and finally, in the elite Level 5 competition, Grade 11 student Maria Starko won silver while her teammate, Grade 10 student Danae Wright, won bronze. In the boy's division, Grade 11 student Mitchell Farquharson won gold with his teammate, Doug Carroll, winning silver. All these athletes helped South Delta Secondary come in first for the third time in a row, followed by Delta Secondary in second and North Vancouver's Windsor Secondary School in third. It is with great sorrow that I announce that the Girls Rugby team has succumbed to its numeric concerns after a long life of one month. To its final days, it demonstrated its tremendous will to live with 11 players showing up for practices but sadly, that was not enough. On Wednesday, March 5th at approximately 12 pm, the Girls Rugby team became all but a memory. It was adored by many, including both its new and returning players who spent countless hours by its side. During its lifetime, the Girls Rugby team was like a ride on a rainy day, a ray of sunshine in a storm, a beacon of light in the darkness. It was unbelievably caring, dedicated and inclusive, preventing anyone from feeling out of place. Practices were always a joyous occasion. The Girls Rugby team is survived by the Grade 8 Boys Rugby team, the Junior Boys Rugby team and the Senior Boys Rugby team, all of which are in good health. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Diomis and Coach Kris for their time, effort and caring support during this difficult time. In lieu of condolences, and if so desired, participation at practices next year would be greatly appreciated. Girls Rugby team, you will remain forever in our hearts.
