At lunch on Friday our T and T interview factory landed a big interview with Student Council Presidents Ciaran Robinson Sophia James. After brief but friendly introductions, Taylin and Tiana got down to business and began the interview:
Taylin & Tiana: Why did you want to become part of student council? Ciaran and Sophia: It’s really important to be a part of the school community and help contribute to a positive school spirit. T & T: What classes/clubs did you need to be a school leader? C & S: We were a part of student council for a few years previously and we were a part of the school council executive too which gave us some insight into how the council ran and what sorts of activities it was a part of creating and/or supporting. T & T: How do you become President of Student Council? C & S: You find a person to run with and then start a campaign which runs in spring time; after campaigning, the students vote and then the elected Presidents start their new roles in September. In our case, we have known each other since grade 8 and were involved in SC together since then so it was not hard to find someone to run with. T & T: What type of stuff does the SC do? C & S: We are responsible for lots of events around the calendar such as Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s day, and we do other activities that bring students together and boost school spirit, like hot chocolate mornings and theme days etc. T & T: Who can be on student council? C & S: Anyone can be on student council – there is an exec committee which does a bit more organizing – anyone can help during actual events like decorating and organizing too. We meet on Mondays at lunch in Mme. MacGregor’s room. T & T: Why do you think students find it fun to be a part of student council? C & S: I think they like how they have a say in the events we do; it’s rewarding to see an event go according to plan and see you were a part of it and being involved in the school – great volunteer hours!
