Tomorrow, Friday the 15th, is black shirt day at SDSS. It's been organized by "The Anti-Racism Coalition of Vancouver", and is trying to push for more black history in the B.C. school curriculum and to mark the civil rights struggle of Black Canadians.
January 15th is also the birthday of Martin Luther King Junior. So wear black and show your support.

According to the Delta Optimist, as of this week there are 7 employees and 51 residents that have tested positive at the Tsawwassen seniors home. The first case was identified on December, 26th of 2020, and now the seniors home is on strict lockdown.
The partnering seniors home, The Wexford, has been placed in lockdown to avoid another outbreak. On Tuesday, Fraser Health provided a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The staff will have daily check-ins with residents if not contacted by 11 am, all staff and residents that had negative test results will be tested on January. 7th. The average female will spend more than 2,500 days or about seven years of their life menstruating. With a pack of tampons costing around 6 dollars, and lasting around two cycles, some people are paying over 36 dollars annually or in 39 years paying close to 1500 dollars.
According to the global children's charity Plan International, 10% of girls across the U.K. cannot afford sanitary products such as pads and tampons, and 15% of girls in the U.K. struggle to afford them. Another 19% of girls in the four nations — Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland — had to use less suitable products because of cost. Just under 50% of girls in the U.K. reported having missed school because of their periods. - Roxie and Liam ![]() It's true. Vancouver's very own 104.3 "The Breeze" has announced that at midnight tonight (Nov 11), they will be switching to Christmas Music 24/7. Also, last week Starbucks released the coveted Starbuck's Christmas cup. These are just a few of the signs that Christmas is hitting very soon. Unfortunately, the Santa Clause parade isn't happening this year, and the firefighter's wont be hosting the Stanley Park Christmas Train. To enter, post an Instagram Pic and tag @southdeltastuco The Calgary International Airport and the Coutts border crossing announced on Thursday that they will be the first in Canada to replace the manditory 14-day quarantines for international travelers, using rapid testing. The pilot project will be in partnership with the federal government and travel industry. This could be an important step towards reopening Canada and is a part of Alberta's Recovery Plan.
With the project, after the rapid test comes back negative, passengers have to spend 14 days in Alberta, wear masks in public and provide daily symptom checks. This project could make a huge impact in parts of Canada that have been hit hard by COVID-19 and rely on the travel and tourism industries. Liam Murray @liam.murray_sdss Further Reading: Canada.ca Article CTV News Article As a student at SDSS and a member of the South Delta community, I think it's important to understand the election, even if I can't vote. This provincial election was called on September 21st by NDP Premier John Horgan. The election date will be Saturday, October 24th.
In the South Delta Riding, we have three candidates: Current Liberal MLA Ian Paton, Bruce Reid for the BC NDP Party and Peter Van Der Velden for the BC Green Party. Today I will be giving a general overview of each of their campaigns, first up, Current MLA Ian Paton. Ian Paton, BC Liberal Party Ian Paton is running for the Liberal Party this year. His campaign is centered around "return to the basics of good government" by lowering taxes, and supporting small and local businesses as a way to "rebuild our economy from the ground up". Ian's political background is deeply rooted in service to Delta, In 2010 he was elected as a councilor in Delta. He was also a chairman of the Agricultural Advisory Committee and the Dikes and Drainage Committee. Ian was also the council liaison for the Delta Farmers’ Institute, the Ladner Business Association, and as a representative on the Metro Vancouver Regional Planning and Agriculture Committee. Bruce Reid, BC New Democratic Party Bruce Reid is new to Provincial politics and has chosen to run as an NDP candidate. He has worked as a teacher, counsellor, and currently as a school trustee. His campaign is built on protecting and funding the BC education system. He also has said that he wants to support farmers and local farm employees, added grants and support for small businesses. And that he will help poverty and homelessness in South Delta. Peter van der Velden, BC Green Party Peter van der Velden has lived in Tsawwassen for around 10 years. His campaign has three main goals: Improving care for seniors, Phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, and Reviewing the viability of the Tilbury Expansion Project. Improving care for seniors: The BC Green Party has introduced a plan to subsidize for-profit senior homes and services with a mix of public, community-based services and co-ops. The plan also includes recognizing caregivers as health care professionals. Phasing out fossil fuel subsidies: "The millions of dollars in fossil fuel subsidies should go to our communities". The plan is to use tax dollars to support a sustainable and green economy after the COVID-19 pandemic and support strengthening communities in our province. And to provide communities with the support they need to boost our economy and help those that need it most Reviewing the viability of the Tilbury Expansion Project: He is a criticizer of the LNG Tilbury expansion plan, which aims to increase LNG production by 900% its original operation and export over the Fraser River, and could potentially violate international safety standards. I am in no way telling you how to vote (if you are eligible), and this is only a surface level overview, for more information, try contacting the campaign offices and make sure to keep up to date with the Delta Optimist. I will try to make some more in-depth analysis of this election in the week to come. Use the links below to contact me and ask questions/concerns.
