After a month of some pretty fierce competition, the winner of the Movember contest was revealed last Friday. The competitors; Mr. Baines, Mr. Pike, Mr. Mcdowell, Mr. Jurica, Mr. Johnston, Austin Pearson, Hugh Taylor, Sam Dyck, Mackenzie Connors and Brendan Waterman, battled it out to see who could grow the most hair and in turn, raise the most money. Throughout the month of November, Student Council members raised money for Movember, which is a fundraiser for men’s health and prostate cancer.
A little back story: It started in Australia with 30 people and now there are 21 countries worldwide with 4 million people participating. In 2012, Canada had raised $442,592,673 since the starting year in 2003. There have also been 581 men’s health projects funded. The Movember charity has been placed in the top 100 NGO’s in the world out of 5 million, by the Global Journal based on innovation, sustainability and impact.
Student Council took pictures of all the contestants at the beginning of the month and then took progress pictures on a weekly basis. Students would put money in jars representing the candidate that they thought would grow the best Mo every Wednesday. While Student Council only raised $79, every little bit counts. The third place winner is Mr. Baines, by 35 cents, the second place winner is Mr. Johnston and the first place winner is Mr. Jurica, by a full dollar. Mr. Jurica received a Gillette Proglide styler for winning the competition. Great job SDSS and congratulations Mr. Jurica!
