This year's Grade 8 Orientation took place all day Thursday, October 9th, 2014. Because of the BC teacher's strike, this year's new students didn't have a chance to have the half-day orientation in September, usually organized by Link Leaders, nor the full-day trip to Deas Island but instead, had all this plus the Grade 8 Breakfast, hosted by Student Council, in one! Starting off the day was a delicious waffle breakfast, made by our very on Chef Worobetz, accompanied by an SD Trivia game for Tim Hortons gift cards. Then, students were taken into the gym where they received name tags and participated in an assembly guided by Mme Macgregor. There, they got comfortable with their neighbors, giving them a short back-massage, played a game of Simon Says and even, at least for a few, hugged it out with a Senior Link student (to pop a balloon, of course!). Then, the Grade 8s were divided amongst groups for a time management activity guided by Link Leaders in classrooms around the school, learning tips to help stay in control of their lives. After a delicious lunch sponsored by M&M Meats, they then got to move around amongst four different stations, the Deas Island portion of their day. Both teachers and Link Leaders helped run the stations including one in the theatre, an Amazing Race station, a little Capture the Flag, tie-dye t-shirts, blind-folded fun and more! This brought us to the end of a fun-filled day where students got to go home feeling much more relaxed about their transition to high school.
