The last Tuesday before Spring Break, teachers of South Delta Secondary held a vote to decide whether to enter in negotiations with British Colombia's government over issues such as class sizes, special needs teachers and a raise after their 1-year contract following the last strike in 2012 expired. 89% voted for. Now, according to News1130's website, the BC Teacher's Federation (BCTF) could issue a 72-hour strike notice after meeting with Labour Relations tomorrow, Tuesday, April 15th to discuss what services are needed in the contract. Though this is probably unlikely, Jim Iker, president of BCTF, notified the public that Stage 1 of the strike will not affect students. He explained that the idea would be to put more pressure on the administration; the only change being that teachers wouldn't be meeting with administrators. When asked about a quick solution, Iker said that they're hoping they "can get a deal without having to escalate into job action." but if it comes to a strike, most teachers at South Delta Secondary think it would take place next year.
